At LankaMe, we operate with one clear belief: service quality matters more than simply offering the lowest possible price.
That is because the quality of your private driver directly affects the quality of your entire Sri Lanka trip. Your driver is not just someone who moves you from place to place. You spend many hours together across the itinerary, and the driver often becomes the person who determines whether the journey feels smooth, safe, and enjoyable.
DilshanA long-awaited trip should never be ruined because of the driver. That is the one thing we never want our guests to experience
When we first started arranging private charters, we also tried to offer lower prices by working with lower-cost drivers. However, as we handled more trips, we began to receive a variety of complaints from customers.
For that reason, LankaMe now prioritizes experienced local drivers who hold government-recognized licenses, even if the price is slightly higher than some other services.
This allows us to provide a higher-quality service. In particular, with the Platinum Plan, we arrange drivers who are at least highly rated Tourist Drivers during peak seasons, and during other seasons we generally arrange drivers with the top-level local qualification, the Chauffeur Guide Driver license.
Of course, having a license alone is not enough to guarantee service quality.

The Platinum Plan is especially recommended because it offers a service comparable to guided tours from major travel companies, but at a more reasonable price.

In this article, we explain the risks hidden behind very cheap taxi charter services in Sri Lanka.
Risks Hidden Behind Cheap Taxi Charter Services
Risk 1: Additional Charges Beyond the Quoted Price
Many services that advertise extremely low prices include a daily distance limit. For example, a large platform may show a price such as £80 / €90 per day, but the small note says that the price only applies up to 150 km per day.
If you exceed the limit, you may be charged an additional fee such as £0.50 / €0.60 per km. Travelers who want to visit many places in a short itinerary can easily travel around 250 km in a single day in Sri Lanka.

Before starting LankaMe, we also experienced this as travelers. We traveled from Colombo to Sigiriya, a route that Google Maps showed as around 180 km, but the driver claimed it was 250 km and requested an additional charge.
Having to worry every day about how much the final price will become is stressful. It also makes it difficult to enjoy the trip with peace of mind.

At LankaMe, we decide the price in advance, so guests can enjoy their trip without worrying about daily meter calculations or unexpected distance charges.
Risk 2: A Very Old Car May Be Assigned
As explained later in this article, Sri Lanka places high import duties on luxury goods such as cars. Many Japanese cars are imported into Sri Lanka, but a car that costs around €10,000 / £12,000 before import can become far more expensive after freight, insurance, customs duties, surcharges, excise duty, and VAT.

In the example above, the total cost to import the vehicle reaches approximately €36,827.73 / £44,193.27. This is one reason why it is difficult for many drivers in Sri Lanka to buy newer vehicles.
As a result, some drivers continue using cars that are more than 20 years old. These vehicles may have problems with comfort, air conditioning, seat belts, or general reliability.

If a driver buys a relatively new car, they naturally need to repay a large loan. This means that a driver with a newer and safer vehicle cannot offer the same price as a driver using an old car.
There is usually a reason behind a very low price. It can affect not only service attitude, but also the quality and safety of the vehicle itself.
Risk 3: The Driver Does Not Appear at the Meeting Point
For many travelers, the first day of a trip is one of the most nervous moments. If a driver does not appear at the airport or hotel without notice, the trip starts with anxiety and confusion.
At LankaMe, we work with responsible drivers. If a driver is late or creates problems, we give strict feedback. If the issue is not corrected, we end the contract with that driver.
If a serious problem occurs, our support structure is also ready to help customers. We do not leave travelers alone in an unfamiliar place.
Risk 4: The Driver Only Handles Point-to-Point Transport
A private charter should take responsibility for almost all travel movements during the trip, except for walking around towns or sites. However, some low-quality drivers only handle transport between major destinations.
For example, they may take you from Colombo to a hotel in Sigiriya, but refuse to handle the transport from the hotel to Sigiriya Rock or Dambulla Cave Temple. In that case, you would need to arrange another vehicle by yourself.

Arranging every short transfer by yourself is troublesome. You may also have to negotiate with unknown drivers each time about price, waiting time, and payment. In the end, the total transport cost can become higher than expected.

If you book a private charter, the service should take responsibility for all necessary travel movements in the itinerary.

In the past, if a driver caused this kind of problem, LankaMe ended the contract and compensated the customer for the extra cost.
Risk 5: Persistent Stops at Shops for Kickbacks
If you have traveled in emerging countries and used taxis, this may sound familiar. A driver who accepts a very low charter fee may try to recover income by taking customers to shops or facilities that pay kickbacks.
For example, the driver may repeatedly try to take you to a restaurant, spice garden, Ayurveda shop, souvenir store, or other partner location that you did not request.

If the place is genuinely good, that may be acceptable. However, in many cases, the quality is low and the price is high, which can cause frustration.
Unwanted stops also create another risk: your original itinerary may not be completed because time is used for places you never wanted to visit.

At LankaMe, if customers request help, our drivers can arrange carefully selected Ayurveda spas, safari jeeps, and other services we can recommend.

But we provide that support only when customers ask for it. Your itinerary and your preferences always come first.
Risk 6: Cheap Services Often Have Weak Support
Cheap services often reduce costs not only on drivers and vehicles, but also on customer support.
To help with itinerary planning before departure and to respond properly when problems happen locally, a company needs a reliable support system. Low-cost services may not be able to invest in that structure.
Some services take the attitude that once the contract is completed, any later problem is not their responsibility.

LankaMe provides careful support, including itinerary planning, useful local information, and assistance when problems occur during the trip.
We also have experienced local senior managers who can support travelers when needed, so guests do not have to solve every issue alone.
Why Sri Lanka Taxi Charter Prices Are Not Extremely Cheap Despite Lower Labor Costs
Some travelers wonder why taxi charter prices in Sri Lanka are not much cheaper, even though labor costs are lower than in Europe or the UK.
The main reason is that the Sri Lankan government imposes high duties and taxes on imported vehicles and other luxury goods.

Sri Lanka imports many cars from Japan and other countries. A car that may cost around €10,000 / £12,000 before import can cost several times more after all import-related costs.

For a driver in Sri Lanka, repaying a loan for a newer vehicle is a serious burden. If the driver does not receive fair compensation, maintaining a safe and comfortable service becomes difficult.

That is why some very cheap drivers try to minimize travel distance, avoid flexible support, or take customers to partner shops for commissions.
To secure high service quality in Sri Lanka, it is necessary to pay drivers fairly.
LankaMe carefully selects drivers who can provide quality service, and we do not compromise on driver standards simply to reduce the headline price.
If customers report problems, we give immediate feedback and require improvement. If a driver does not improve, we end the contract and continue working only with high-quality drivers.

At the contracting stage, our experienced local managers strictly check the driver’s experience, license, vehicle condition, and service attitude.
The Strength of LankaMe’s Platinum Plan
One of LankaMe’s strongest advantages is the Platinum Plan, which can arrange a Sri Lanka government-recognized Tourist Driver or Chauffeur Guide Driver.
A driver with a Chauffeur Guide Driver license can accompany guests at sightseeing sites and provide explanations. Tourist Drivers can also accompany guests to many places, but for Sigiriya Rock, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa, a local guide may be required.
In principle, the Platinum Plan arranges a Chauffeur Guide Driver. However, during peak seasons such as year-end holidays and other high-demand periods, the number of available Chauffeur Guide Drivers may be limited. In that case, we arrange a highly rated Tourist Driver and provide guided support at key sightseeing spots such as Sigiriya Rock, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa without additional guide charges.

With the Royal Plan, LankaMe guarantees a highly rated driver among Chauffeur Guide Drivers whenever possible.

This kind of added value is not something a very cheap service can usually provide.

Because the driver can also play the role of a guide, guests can enjoy a service close to a guided tour from a major travel company at a more reasonable price.
In addition, suitable safari jeep arrangements, whale watching arrangements, and other local experiences can also be coordinated through the driver when needed.
For travelers who want to enjoy Sri Lanka more deeply and comfortably, the Platinum Plan is one of our most recommended options.
Enjoy Sri Lanka Safely and Comfortably with a Private Taxi Charter
Choosing a taxi charter only by price can create unexpected risks: additional charges, old vehicles, weak support, unwanted shopping stops, and drivers who do not take responsibility for the whole itinerary.
LankaMe focuses on service quality because we believe a private driver should make your Sri Lanka trip safer, smoother, and more memorable.
If you value comfort, safety, and reliable support, we recommend choosing a service based not only on the lowest price, but on the quality of the driver, vehicle, and support system behind it.
