Sri Lanka Travel Preparation
A practical checklist for UK travellers: what to pack, how to stay connected, where to check entry rules and how to prepare your cash and insurance.

A little preparation makes an independent Sri Lanka holiday much easier. This guide brings together seven detailed articles adapted for British travellers, plus our itinerary-planning guide. Work through the checklist before departure, then keep the relevant guides saved on your phone.
Checked 31 October 2026. Entry rules, telecom plans and other practical details can change. Use the linked official sources for the final check before your trip.
Plan your independent Sri Lanka holiday
Start with your dates, arrival airport and a short list of places you most want to see. Then check how many hotel changes and driving days the route needs. You do not need a fixed itinerary to ask LankaMe about a private driver, but knowing your priorities helps us discuss a workable journey.

What to wear: climate, region and temple etiquette
Start with lightweight, breathable clothing, then add a jumper or fleece for higher hill-country stops. Keep a complete outfit that covers your legs and shoulders for temple visits.
Comfortable shoes matter on steps and uneven paths. A light waterproof, hat and a separate dry outfit are useful on a route that combines coast, cultural sites and tea country.

Check your plugs and charging equipment
A UK Type G plug works with a matching Type G socket, but older Type D round-pin sockets are also encountered. Ask your accommodation what is available and pack a suitable adaptor if needed.
Sri Lanka uses 230V, 50Hz. Read each appliance’s input label; an adaptor changes the connection, not the voltage. High-power appliances need particular care.

Set up WhatsApp before you leave Britain
Register or test WhatsApp while you can receive a code on your own number. A UK mobile number uses +44 without its initial domestic 0. Save the driver number supplied with your confirmed booking.
Agree dates, meeting points and Sri Lankan local times in short messages. Save arrival instructions offline and keep another way to reach the customer team if data is unavailable.

Choose a SIM, eSIM or roaming plan
Check that your phone is unlocked and, for eSIM, that the exact model is compatible. Compare the total price, data, validity and whether local calls or SMS are included.
Local registration normally involves your passport. Test the connection before leaving the counter and keep your UK line’s roaming settings under control.

Plan LKR cash as well as cards
Exchange GBP through authorised providers and compare the final rupee amount after fees. Keep a receipt, smaller notes where possible and a backup card separate from your main wallet.
Your confirmed LankaMe quotation separates the online Agency Service Fee from the Driver Fare paid locally, normally in LKR cash. Confirm the payment schedule before departure.

Build a route around realistic travel days
Choose a few priorities, then connect them in a workable order. A short distance on the map can still mean a lengthy drive, especially on hill-country roads or through towns.
Leave time for breaks, hotel check-in and weather changes. Our existing English planning guide helps you turn dates and interests into a private-tour outline.

Check your passport and obtain your ETA
British-passport travellers should use the current official rules, not an old fee quoted in a travel article. Check passport validity and obtain the appropriate approval before travel.
Our step-by-step guide explains the difference between an application acknowledgement and approval, plus the details to check before flying.

Check the cover behind your policy number
Confirm that the policy covers every traveller, the full trip and your planned activities. Medical treatment, repatriation, cancellation and excesses deserve separate checks.
A bank-account or card benefit is not automatically suitable for every holiday. Read the documents and ask the insurer about unclear points before departure.

Share your travel dates, party size, luggage and the places you would like to visit. We can discuss a private-driver route and the activities that may fit it. Check your chosen plan and confirmed quotation for the exact arrangements and payment terms.
