At Sigiriya Rock, for example, he once recommended beginning the climb before daylight. The guests initially wondered why they had to leave so early, but they reached the summit in time to see the sunrise and came to appreciate the reason for his timing, making the achievement of the climb even more memorable. At Pinnawala, he guided elephant-loving guests to an excellent spot where they could observe the animals closely.
Japanese communication is another of Lanka’s strengths. Although he can already hold a wide range of conversations in Japanese, he continues to learn. He writes down new words and expressions he hears from guests and reviews them during breaks, always working to provide even better service. Guests have praised not only his Japanese ability but also this commitment to improvement.
Lanka values both safety and efficiency. He follows traffic rules, is considerate of pedestrians crossing the road and avoids unnecessary delays. Guests have said that his driving technique and manners made them feel completely secure. During longer journeys he explains what can be seen from the window and may accompany guests to markets and supermarkets, helping them choose local snacks, spices and tea.

On this trip, we were fortunate to spend five days with a wonderful driver named Lanka, and we thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰.
About our guide, Lanka:
1. He looked after us with exceptional attention to detail, allowing us to travel comfortably for five days. He explained what we saw from the car and guided us to the right places, at the right times, along well-chosen routes. It made for a truly wonderful trip.
2. His Japanese was excellent, and he was also a dedicated learner. He wrote down words and expressions we used, and his commitment to becoming an even better guide was impressive.
3. His driving was precise and he followed traffic rules carefully. He was considerate toward pedestrians crossing the road, yet our journeys remained efficient with no wasted time.
4. The only unpleasant incident occurred after we said goodbye to Lanka. At the airport, we did not really understand the role of the porters. Someone helped with our luggage, so we tipped him as we might at a hotel—200 rupees per suitcase, for three suitcases in total. He said it was not enough, and we eventually paid 1,000 rupees. Everything was resolved, but it left us feeling a little uncomfortable. Not only in this situation but elsewhere too, we were unsure how much to tip. It would be helpful to receive guidance in advance about appropriate amounts.

Airport porters and baggage-handling services are not arranged or operated by our company or the assigned driver. Services inside the airport after you have said goodbye to Lanka are therefore outside our control.
At the same time, your feedback has reminded us how difficult it can be for first-time visitors to Sri Lanka to know how much to tip.
At places such as airports, someone may offer to carry your luggage even if you did not request assistance. It is perfectly acceptable to decline if you do not need the service. We also believe that knowing the usual tipping ranges for different situations in advance helps guests travel with greater peace of mind.
We will improve our pre-departure guidance by providing clearer information about customary tipping at hotels, restaurants and airports, as well as for drivers.
