Sri Lanka SIM Card & eSIM: Dialog at Colombo Airport

Sri Lanka SIM Card & eSIM: Dialog at Colombo Airport

Practical information checked on 31 October 2026. Rules, prices and interfaces can change; use the official links when making your final arrangements.

Mobile data makes it much easier to check maps, contact your driver and find a hotel entrance in Sri Lanka. British travellers can choose a local physical SIM, a compatible eSIM or their UK network’s roaming package. The best choice depends on your handset, length of stay and whether you need a Sri Lankan number for ordinary calls as well as internet access.

Buying a SIM at Colombo airport

At Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), the main international airport serving Colombo, mobile-network counters are in the arrivals area after customs. Dialog’s official guidance identifies its airport stores in this area and asks visitors to present a passport for activation. Keep your passport accessible after immigration and allow extra time if there is a queue. Dialog tourist SIM information.

Before paying, ask the staff to confirm the total price, data allowance, expiry date, local call allowance and any fair-use restrictions. If you need to make normal calls to local numbers, do not assume a data-only travel eSIM includes them. Keep the receipt and the details of your new number.

These are examples shown on Dialog’s official tourist page when checked on 31 October 2026. Its 50GB option also lists unlimited WhatsApp, subject to the operator’s current terms. Prices and benefits can change; confirm the validity period and what “unlimited” includes before buying. We show prices in LKR rather than a fixed pound conversion, because exchange rates and card charges vary.

Compare the available operators and your expected usage rather than choosing only by headline gigabytes. Maps and short messages use a different amount of data from video calls, streaming and laptop tethering. Ask about coverage along your route; mobile reception can vary in rural areas, the hills and national parks. Download important maps and booking documents for offline use.

Meet your driver after sorting your SIM

If you have arranged an airport pick-up, follow the meeting instructions supplied with your confirmation. Let us know in advance if you intend to buy a SIM before meeting the driver, and message once you are connected. The photograph illustrates the general arrivals meeting area; it does not guarantee a particular driver, sign or position for every booking.

Before leaving the counter, switch off Wi-Fi briefly and test a web page using mobile data. Send a WhatsApp message and, if local voice calls matter to you, confirm that the calling allowance is active. Ask staff how to check your remaining data and top up. Dialog lists MyDialog and the relevant dial codes on its official page; use the latest instructions provided with your plan.

Buying an eSIM before you fly

An eSIM can save a counter visit, but check that your exact phone model supports eSIM and is network-unlocked. Read when the plan’s validity starts: installation, activation or first connection can have different meanings between providers. Save the installation instructions and QR code securely, and do not delete the eSIM while troubleshooting unless the provider tells you to; a code may not be reusable.

  • Check whether the plan is data-only or includes a local number, calls and SMS.
  • Confirm hotspot/tethering rules, network coverage and any speed or fair-use limits.
  • Have reliable internet available for installation and follow the provider’s activation steps.
  • Choose the travel SIM for mobile data and check which line is used for calls.
  • Keep your UK line available if you need bank messages, but review roaming charges and data settings first.

UK phone compatibility, roaming and other options

Check the handset’s network-lock status before departure, particularly for an older or imported phone. Do not assume that inserting a SIM will solve a locked-handset problem. Your UK operator can explain its own roaming tariffs, spending limits and whether any travel pass includes Sri Lanka. Charges outside the UK vary by network and package. Ofcom advice on using a mobile abroad.

Hotel Wi-Fi can be useful, but relying on it alone leaves you without a connection between stops. A portable hotspot is another option for a group, provided you check battery life, local coverage and whether everyone must remain near the device. Avoid assuming every vehicle or attraction has Wi-Fi.

Keep WhatsApp on your UK number

You can generally continue using the WhatsApp account registered to your UK number while a local SIM/eSIM provides the data connection. You do not need to change your account number just because you have arrived in Sri Lanka. Set it up before travel, retain access to your registered number for possible re-verification and follow our WhatsApp driver-contact guide.

Your arrival checklist

  • Unlocked, compatible phone and enough battery.
  • Passport, plan details and a receipt for registration and support.
  • Working data tested before leaving the counter.
  • Driver meeting instructions saved offline.
  • UK roaming and dual-SIM settings checked to avoid unintended charges.
