If you are planning a holiday on a full British citizen passport, check Sri Lanka’s entry rules before booking and again before departure. The ETA is an electronic travel authorisation used for short visits. It is separate from your flight, hotel and LankaMe transport reservation; booking a driver does not submit an immigration application for you.
Do UK citizens need a Sri Lanka visa or ETA?

As checked on 31 October 2026, GOV.UK says British citizens should obtain an ETA online before travelling; it is issued free of charge for a 30-day tourist visit. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you arrive. This advice is for a full “British citizen” passport, not every person resident in the UK or every category of British nationality. Current FCDO entry requirements.
Sri Lanka’s immigration authority confirms the free tourist-ETA scheme for eligible nationalities, including the UK, effective from 25 May 2026. Its notice allows double entry within the original 30-day period; a second entry does not restart a fresh 30 days. Always read the conditions on your own approval. Official ETA information.
Who should check a different route?
If you hold another passport, plan to work or study, need a longer stay or have unusual entry circumstances, consult the Department of Immigration and Emigration or the Sri Lankan High Commission rather than selecting tourist travel by default. Do not rely on eligibility based only on where you live. For an extension, follow the official immigration process and arrange it before the permitted stay expires.
When should you apply?
Apply with enough time to resolve mistakes or a request for further information. Do not leave it until airport check-in, and do not treat a receipt as approval. Processing times can vary, so this guide does not guarantee a same-day decision. Check the permitted application window and validity on the current official site for your travel dates.
How to apply on the official website
1. Open the official ETA site in English

Start at www.eta.gov.lk and select English if needed. Check the domain carefully. Search adverts and commercial application services can charge their own fees; a payment request does not by itself prove you are on the government website. For an eligible British tourist application, compare any fee shown with the current official rules before proceeding.
2. Read the current instructions

Read the eligibility and purpose-of-visit information. Have your passport, intended arrival date, flight details if requested, first accommodation address and an email account you can access. Complete a separate assessment for each traveller, including children; follow the current instructions for individual or group applications.
3. Choose the application that matches your trip

For an individual tourist application, use the corresponding tourist option. Do not select business or transit merely because it appears easier. If your journey involves leaving Sri Lanka and returning, check the entry conditions against the entire itinerary rather than assuming a new stay begins on return.
4. Enter passport and travel details carefully

| Field | What to use | Common mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Surname and given names | Copy the passport spelling and include the names required by the form. | Using a nickname or omitting required middle names. |
| Nationality | The nationality stated in your travel document. | Choosing your country of residence instead of passport nationality. |
| Passport details | Your own passport number, issue and expiry information. | Confusing the letter O and the digit 0, or using an old passport. |
| Arrival and accommodation | Your intended arrival and requested Sri Lankan contact/address details. | Mixing day and month or using an incorrect hotel address. |
| Email and telephone | Details you can access before and during travel. UK numbers use +44 without the initial domestic 0. | A typing error that prevents you receiving the decision. |
Check the review screen line by line before submitting. The sample illustration is not a completed application and cannot be used for travel. Never copy its fictional name or bracketed prompts into your own form. If you spot an error after submission, consult the official help channel for the appropriate correction process.
5. Keep the acknowledgement and application reference

Save the reference and any acknowledgement email. An “application received” message means the application has reached the system; it does not mean permission has been granted. Use the official status facility if you need to check progress and follow any instructions in the decision. Avoid repeatedly submitting duplicate applications without checking the official advice.
6. Check the approval notice

When a decision arrives, confirm that the name, passport details and conditions match your trip. Read the dates carefully: the deadline for using an approval and the period you may remain after arrival are different matters. Save the notice offline and carry a copy with your travel documents in case the airline or immigration officer asks to see it. An ETA does not remove the need to meet the other entry conditions.
Common problems to avoid
- Assuming a free ETA means there is no application to make.
- Using an old article’s fee or a third-party fee as the official price.
- Travelling with a pending acknowledgement instead of checking the decision.
- Applying with the wrong passport nationality or an expired passport.
- Forgetting to check the rules again after a passport or itinerary change.
Final checks before flying from the UK
Keep your passport, ETA decision, onward travel and accommodation details together. Check the requirements of your airline and any transit country as well as Sri Lanka. Health-entry requirements can depend on the countries you have visited, so read the current official guidance for your full route. Arrange appropriate travel insurance and save your airport pick-up instructions offline.
