LankaMe can arrange a private boat safari on Madu River in Sri Lanka.
Enjoy a boat exclusively for your group as you cruise through mangrove-lined waterways. After travelling beneath the green tunnels, visit Cinnamon Island and try the fish spa experience. The boat tour takes approximately one hour.
Where is Madu River?
Madu River is a wetland destination around Balapitiya, in Galle District, Southern Province, on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. It is also known as Madu Ganga or Maduganga. Travelling south along the coast from Colombo, you reach Bentota, then Balapitiya, and then Galle.
The river lies south of Bentota’s beach area and north of Galle, making it an option during a stay on the southwest coast or on a travel day between Colombo and Galle. On the map, find Balapitiya first, then look at the waterways and islands around it to understand the setting.
Boats depart from boarding points around Balapitiya. Tell us your hotel and the places you plan to visit before and after the safari, and we can discuss an itinerary combining your road journey with the boat trip.

How does it fit into a coastal itinerary?
| Starting point or nearby town | Location and itinerary ideas |
|---|---|
| Colombo | Balapitiya is south of Colombo. The Southern Province Tourism Bureau gives an approximate journey time of 2–3 hours from Colombo. Your starting point, route and traffic affect the actual time, so allow a comfortable margin. |
| Bentota | Madu River lies south of Bentota. Ask us about combining the river’s natural scenery with a stay at a hotel in the Bentota area. |
| Galle | Madu River is north of Galle. It can be considered as a stop on a journey between the Colombo area and Galle, depending on your other plans. |
The approximate one-hour duration refers to the boat tour itself. Allow additional time for the return journey from your hotel and for boarding, so the safari fits comfortably with your other plans.
What makes Madu River special? Islands, lagoons and mangroves
Madu River’s appeal is the contrast between broad stretches of open water and narrow channels enclosed by trees. A lagoon opens out like a lake near the river mouth, with green islands along its edges. As your boat moves on, wide views of the sky give way to mangrove tunnels beneath interlacing branches.

A wetland of international importance
Maduganga was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance on 11 December 2003. The listed site covers approximately 915 hectares. Waterways link Maduganga and Randombe Lake, while mangroves along the islands and shores help support a wide range of wildlife.
The wetland provides breeding and nursery areas for fish and attracts birds. Look quietly along the banks and branches: you may spot waterbirds or monitor lizards. Wildlife sightings depend on natural conditions on the day, so take time to enjoy the changing greenery and reflections as well.
Island life: cinnamon growing and fishing
Fishing, cinnamon cultivation and coconut growing are part of local life. Boats beside the banks and islands wrapped in greenery show that the river is both a visitor destination and a place where people live and work. A stop at Cinnamon Island offers a glimpse of this local character.

Private boat safari: two experiences in about one hour
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Tour type | A private tour with one boat exclusively for your group |
| Route | Mangrove tunnel cruise → Cinnamon Island visit and fish spa experience |
| Duration | Approximately one hour |
1. Cruise through the mangrove tunnels
The first highlight is a cruise through channels thick with mangroves. The word ‘cave’ describes the branches and roots that meet overhead, forming a green tunnel rather than a rock cavern. From your low vantage point on the water, you can see the tangled trees and light filtering through the leaves up close.
Part of the enjoyment is the change from the openness of the lagoon to the sheltered atmosphere beneath the trees. When taking photographs, include the branches above and the channel stretching ahead, as well as your travelling companions, to capture the depth of the tunnel.

2. Cinnamon Island and the fish spa experience
After the mangrove cruise, visit Cinnamon Island and enjoy the fish spa experience. Sit beside the water, lower your feet into the pool and watch small fish gather around them. It is a chance to spend time by the water as well as enjoy the scenery from the boat.
Sitting alongside your companions, as in the photographs, makes for memorable reactions as the fish approach. The approximately one-hour tour combines the adventurous feel of the mangrove channels with a stop on the island.

Bring a hat, sunscreen and drinking water, as open sections of the river are exposed to the sun. Comfortable clothing and footwear that is easy to manage are useful for getting on and off the boat and for the fish spa experience.
A waterproof phone case or a bag that closes securely can help keep your belongings together near the water. Wear a life jacket on board and follow the local staff’s instructions when boarding, disembarking and travelling through the channels.
