Astrology is deeply woven into everyday life in Sri Lanka, and visitors can arrange a traditional horoscope reading too. It can be both a distinctive travel memory and an opportunity to reflect on your life.

Why is astrology so popular in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lankan astrology has roots in the Vedic astrology tradition of ancient India, often known as Jyotish. Over the centuries it has developed its own local traditions. Like Ayurveda, it is connected with Vedic philosophy and is respected locally as a field of study, rather than simply a form of fortune-telling.
Many families have a horoscope prepared soon after a baby is born. The chart can help them choose auspicious initials for the child’s name, making astrology part of family life from the beginning.
People also consult astrologers at major turning points: education, employment, starting a business, choosing the direction and timing of a new house, and marriage compatibility.
In arranged marriages, comparing the two people’s horoscopes is a familiar custom. Compatible charts are traditionally considered a favourable sign for a lasting relationship.
Astrology also appears in public life. Auspicious times for Sinhala and Tamil New Year rituals are calculated each year, and charts may be consulted for important ceremonies and political events.
From personal decisions to national celebrations, astrology has a strong place in Sri Lankan society. Astrologers are often addressed respectfully as teachers; some belong to families that have passed down the practice for generations, and some also practise Ayurveda.
What can a horoscope reading tell you?
A horoscope is based on the positions of celestial bodies at the moment of birth. Three details are needed: your date of birth, birth time and birth place.
Birth time is particularly important for the traditional calculation. Check your birth certificate, family records or a record kept by your parents before travelling if possible. Without an accurate time, the astrologer may find a precise reading more difficult.
The astrologer calculates the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets such as Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, then interprets their placement among twelve signs and twelve houses. Sri Lankan astrology places particular emphasis on the Moon.
The reading may explore personality, strengths and weaknesses. Some visitors say they have been surprised by how closely an astrologer described their current occupation or circumstances.
Other topics may include career suitability, marriage timing, compatibility, wellbeing concerns and periods regarded as turning points in life. In this tradition, planetary periods are interpreted as cycles that influence different stages of a person’s life.
Sri Lanka is also famous for its gemstones. Astrology and gemstones are closely connected: an astrologer may recommend a “lucky stone” based on the chart. Many Sri Lankans wear such stones in rings. If you are interested in buying a gem, this offers another way to learn about local traditions.
How you interpret a reading is entirely up to you. Astrologers may say that everything is written in the chart; visitors can choose to take it as spiritual guidance, a cultural experience or simply a prompt for self-reflection.

Consultation fees and locations
A consultation near the airport is listed at JPY 12,000, subject to exchange-rate changes. A session can be arranged around arrival or departure, making it easier to include in your itinerary.
The group consultation fees are listed below in Japanese yen. The one-person group rate differs from the airport consultation rate. Please confirm the current total, location and any additional travel costs when you enquire.

A consultation in Colombo can also be arranged. An additional travel charge applies there, but it may be possible to combine the appointment with sightseeing in the city.

What to prepare before your reading
Before the appointment, check your date of birth (including the year), birth time as accurately as possible, and place of birth.
A birth certificate or family birth record is useful; your parents may also be able to help. If the birth time is unknown, the reading may be less precise.
The astrologer’s availability needs to be checked in advance. Please mention the consultation when you contact us about your trip.
