LankaMe now offers an exclusive private tour of Lunuganga in Bentota. We can arrange a visit for one person or more and request a time that fits your itinerary in advance. That means less time waiting for a scheduled group tour and a lower risk of arriving to find it fully booked. Here is what makes Geoffrey Bawa’s former home and garden worth seeing, and how to plan your visit.
What is Lunuganga? Geoffrey Bawa’s garden and country house
Lunuganga is the garden and country house that Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa shaped on the shores of Dedduwa Lake near Bentota. He acquired the former plantation in 1948 and continued to develop its buildings, gardens and views over many years. It is a place to experience architecture together with the landscape, rather than a building in isolation. The Geoffrey Bawa Trust has more background on the estate.

Inside Lunuganga: notice the timber beams, furniture and changing light.
Lunuganga is near Bentota on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. It can work well as a stop when travelling to or from Galle Fort. Tell us your other planned stops and we can suggest a practical route.

Three highlights of a Lunuganga visit
1. Garden views framed by the lake and greenery
The view changes as you walk: the lake appears through the trees, and buildings take on a different character from each garden path. Bawa spent roughly 50 years shaping the landscape. Looking at the garden as a series of outdoor rooms helps reveal how deliberately each view was composed. See also Heritance Ahungalla’s introduction to Lunuganga.

Shaded garden paths and buildings open to the greenery.
2. Open spaces connecting architecture and nature
Large openings, shaded roofs and doors leading into the garden bring the landscape close to the rooms. Notice how the building feels different when seen from inside and from the garden.
3. Furniture, light and small architectural details
Wooden furniture, lighting and floor patterns all reward a closer look. A guided visit adds context to the design, even if you have no specialist knowledge of architecture.
What time are the regular Lunuganga garden tours?
The regular garden tours listed in the official visitor information start at the following Sri Lanka local times. Please check the latest schedule before travelling.
| Tour | Start time (Sri Lanka time) |
|---|---|
| First | 11:00 |
| Second | 14:00 |
| Third | 15:00 |
For a regular tour, you need to arrive for one of these fixed start times. Depending on your arrival, you may have to wait for the next tour; places can also fill up.
Three benefits of a LankaMe private Lunuganga tour
1. A private visit from one guest
We can arrange the tour for a solo traveller, a couple, friends or a family. Enjoy time at Bawa’s estate with your own party.
2. A time coordinated around your travel plans
Instead of building your day around the regular 11:00, 14:00 or 15:00 departures, tell us your preferred time. We will coordinate with the venue and confirm the actual start time once arranged. This can make it easier to combine Lunuganga with hotel transfers or other sightseeing.
3. A reservation made before you arrive
Once your booking is confirmed, you can visit at the agreed time without relying on remaining places in a scheduled group. Advance planning is especially helpful when you need to continue to another destination that day.
