Sri Lanka has six cultural and two natural World Heritage sites. Ancient cities and temples introduce children to the island’s history, while the Central Highlands and Sinharaja Forest Reserve offer opportunities to experience its natural environment on suitable walking routes.

A car with a private driver makes it easier to combine sites without repeatedly arranging transport. Many family itineraries focus on cultural highlights such as Sigiriya Rock and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy.
Families can also choose a safari or whale-watching trip for their wildlife experience instead of a longer forest trek. These activities complement a cultural itinerary; they are separate from the two natural World Heritage sites.
Look for leopards and elephant gatherings on safari
Seeing wildlife in its natural surroundings is one of Sri Lanka’s great attractions. Five of the best-known safari parks are:

- Udawalawe National Park
- Wilpattu National Park
- Minneriya National Park
- Kaudulla National Park
Yala is particularly well known for Sri Lankan leopards, which may also be seen in Wilpattu. Minneriya and Kaudulla are known for large gatherings of elephants. The animals are wild, so sightings and the size of a gathering vary.
A safari jeep is needed for these park excursions. For a family, having your own vehicle allows you to share the experience together without joining a mixed group.

Go whale watching from Mirissa
Sri Lanka’s wildlife experiences extend offshore. From Mirissa on the south coast, boats leave early in the morning for the open ocean, with blue whales among the main species visitors hope to see.

Day 1 — Travel from Colombo or the airport to Sigiriya
Head towards Sigiriya and stay at Heritance Kandalama, a hotel option suggested in this route. If your arrival time allows, stop at Dambulla Cave Temple on the way.
Day 2 — Climb Sigiriya Rock, then continue to Kandy
Visit Sigiriya Rock before travelling to Kandy and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. A Kandyan dance performance is another option if the day’s timing works for your family.
Day 3 — Explore the tea country around Nuwara Eliya
Travel from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya for tea-country scenery, a tea-plucking experience or afternoon tea. Heritance Tea Factory is a suggested place to stay and offers a setting closely connected with tea; ask about available tea activities when planning.

Day 4 — Take a short scenic train ride and stay near Yala
Your driver takes you to Bandarawela station. Ride towards Demodara for roughly an hour, passing tea-country scenery and crossing the Nine Arch Bridge. Rejoin your car afterwards and continue to accommodation near Yala National Park.

Day 5 — Enjoy a Yala safari, then head to Mirissa
Take an early-morning jeep safari in Yala, then travel to the beach resort area of Mirissa. Keep the rest of the day flexible after the early start.
Day 6 — Whale watching and the journey to the airport
If the season, sea conditions and your flight schedule allow, take an early whale-watching trip before continuing to the airport. Add a stop in Galle only if there is enough time. With an early flight or a tight connection, adjust the final day rather than trying to fit in every activity.
